Buddhism Today

This website was created by Kadampa Buddhists to provide information about Buddhism and meditation. It is our hope that it may benefit people’s understanding and practice of Buddha’s profound teachings. The information in this website was compiled from books written by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, the spiritual director of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT).

The Kadampa Buddhism of the NKT is an entirely independent Buddhist tradition and has no political affiliations.

The Kadampa Buddhism of the NKT is an entirely independent Buddhist tradition and has no political affiliations. It is an association of Buddhist Centers and practitioners that derive their inspiration and guidance from the example of the ancient Kadampa Buddhist Masters and their teachings, as presented by Geshe Kelsang.

Kadampa Buddhism was first introduced to the West in 1976 by the renowned Kadampa Buddhist Master, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Since then he has worked tirelessly to provide all the conditions necessary to support contemporary practitioners. He has written twenty-one authentic books on Buddhism that are now being translated into many different languages.

A worldwide network

Geshe Kelsang has also established over 1100 Kadampa Buddhist centers and study groups and study groups in many countries around the world where people of all cultures can train in meditation and other Buddhist practices.

These centers all have qualified local teachers and offer introductory classes, structured study programs, and meditation retreats. These classes are open to everyone. You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend them, or to derive great benefit from them.

Every year Kadampa Buddhists from around the world gather for meditation festivals in the USA and Europe, including two in England, where they receive special teachings and empowerments and enjoy a spiritual holiday.

If you’d like further teachings on meditation techniques or the Buddhist way of life, you may contact a Center near you. Kadampa Buddhist centers hold regular classes on meditation techniques. The teachers are Westerners and teach in a way that is especially suited to Westerners with busy lifestyles.

Use the Find a Meditation Center search at the bottom of any page on this website to find a center near you that offers these classes.
